Research Plan

The Minnesota Study On Wind Turbine Acoustics (MNSOWTA) is being funded by Xcel Energy through their Renewable Development Fund. It is being done by the University of Minnesota's St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL), and the Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Science (SLHS). The first stage of the project is to conduct a review of all relevant literature. Acoustic data recorded at the Eolos site in 2012 will be analyzed with additional measurements done to fill gaps in the 2012 data, such as various wind shears and distances. Wind farm measurements will be done at Pleasant Valley Wind Farm near Hayfield, MN. After measuring as much data as possible in a variety of conditions, the wind farm measurements will be analyzed. The outcome of the study will be guidelines on noise monitoring. All aspects of MNSOWTA will be done under the guidance of a Technical Advisory Panel (TAP). The TAP is an expert group representative of industry and academia.
